Culturlann Sweeney Kilkee - Children's Summer Film Programme

At Culturlann Sweeney · Kilkee, Co. Clare

Children watching a film in a small cinema at an arts centre

Kilkee on a wet July afternoon has a reliable answer: head to Cultúrlann Sweeney on O’Connell Street. The community arts centre runs a dedicated children’s film programme every July and August, turning its 108-seat theatre into a proper little cinema for younger audiences. It suits families with children of primary-school age who want something genuinely good to do when the Atlantic has other ideas, and it fits easily into a west Clare holiday without eating a whole day.

What to expect

Cultúrlann Sweeney is a compact but well-equipped building that holds a theatre, a gallery space, and a library under one roof. The film club runs year-round for adults, and each summer the programme shifts to include a dedicated children’s strand - family-friendly films shown in the intimate 108-seat auditorium. Specific titles are announced closer to each screening date, so it is worth checking the centre’s website or social media in the weeks before your visit to see what is on.

The summer programme at Cultúrlann Sweeney stretches well beyond film. Theatre, live music, and community events such as the Kilkee Civic Trust talks and the Kilkee Playwrights Festival all run through July and August. If you are staying in the area for a week, it is the kind of place worth checking back into more than once.

Getting there

Kilkee is on the Loop Head Peninsula in west Clare, about 55km south-west of Ennis - roughly 55 minutes by car via the N68 and N67. There is no direct public bus service to Kilkee town itself, so a car is the practical option for most visitors coming from elsewhere in Clare or from Limerick. Cultúrlann Sweeney is on O’Connell Street in the town centre, within easy walking distance of the seafront and the main car parks around Kilkee’s bay.

While you’re in Kilkee

Kilkee’s horseshoe-shaped bay is one of Clare’s finest bathing spots, and the Diamond Rocks and Pollock Holes are worth a look even outside swimming season. There is more to see in Kilkee and across Co. Clare.
