At Delvin Livestock Mart · Castletowndelvin, Delvin, Co. Westmeath
Delvin Livestock Mart runs a weekly cattle and sheep sale every Thursday in the mart yard at Castletowndelvin, on the edge of Delvin village in north Westmeath. Farmers bring cows, heifers, bullocks and calves through the rings from mid-morning, with a dedicated sheep sale following at midday. A separate weanling sale is held on Friday evenings. It is one of the smaller family-run marts still trading independently in the county, drawing farmers from north Westmeath, south Cavan and east Meath who prefer a local ring to the bigger regional marts in Ballinasloe or Tullamore.
The yard opens at 6:30am so farmers can pen animals ahead of selling. Ring 1 takes cows, heifers, weanlings and bullocks from 10:30am, running alongside Ring 2’s calf sale at the same time, and Ring 3 opens at midday for the sheep sale. Numbers move with the season, busiest in spring and autumn when farmers are buying in or moving stock on, quieter in the depths of winter, but Thursday selling runs year-round regardless. Buyers are a mix of local farmers restocking or finishing cattle, plus factory and export buyers who work the midlands mart circuit week to week. Online bidding is available alongside the ring-side auction for buyers who cannot get to Castletowndelvin in person. The Friday evening weanling sale at 6pm is a separate fixture from the Thursday cattle and sheep day, aimed mainly at farmers moving young stock through the back half of the year.
Delvin Livestock Mart is at Castletowndelvin, a short drive from Delvin village on the road toward Castlepollard. There is no rail service to this part of north Westmeath, so the mart is reached by car, typically via the R394 or R395. On-site yard parking is available for farmers arriving with trailers and livestock boxes.
Delvin is a small north Westmeath town built around a Norman motte and the ruins of Delvin Castle, with the story of the 1918 “Valley of the Squinting Windows” scandal still part of local memory. There is more to see in Delvin and across Co. Westmeath.
