At Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium · Lone Moor Road, Derry BT48 9JF
A Friday night under the floodlights at the Brandywell is one of the more distinctive football experiences on the island. Derry City FC host Waterford in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division on 3 July 2026, kick-off at 7:45pm. The ground holds just over 7,700 and fills with noise in a way that larger, emptier stadiums rarely manage. If you have never seen League of Ireland football and want to start somewhere, this is a good one - a historic club in a working city that cares deeply about its team.
Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium takes its name from the former club captain who died in 2017 at the age of 27. The renaming in 2018 meant something to supporters, and that sense of local pride runs through match nights. The Main Stand is modern and comfortable; the terraced end behind the goal fills with the louder element of the home crowd. The pitch is artificial 3G, which makes for a fast, direct game whatever the July weather delivers. Waterford have been one of the more consistent sides in the Premier Division in recent seasons, so this is a competitive fixture rather than a dead rubber. Derry sits on the River Foyle at the north-west corner of Ireland, roughly 90 minutes from Belfast on the A6 and about two and a half hours from Dublin via the M1 and A5. From the south, follow the A5 alongside the Foyle, cross the Craigavon Bridge, and the floodlights above the Bogside will guide you the rest of the way. The stadium has a car park on Lone Moor Road and street parking nearby, though arriving early on a Friday evening avoids the worst of it. Londonderry railway station is about 15 minutes on foot - cross the Craigavon Bridge and head uphill through the Bogside. Bus Eireann and Translink services both serve the city, with Foyle Street bus station about 10 minutes’ walk from the ground.
The city walls, the Bogside murals, and the Peace Bridge are all within easy walking distance of the ground, and there are good pubs in the city centre for a drink before or after - WG’s Bar and the Rocking Chair are popular with matchday visitors. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
