At Millennium Forum · Newmarket Street, Derry, Co. Derry
Electric Light Orchestra built one of the most distinctive sounds in rock - those swooping strings, the cosmic production, Jeff Lynne’s ear for a melody that refuses to leave your head. The ELO Tribute Show brings all of that back to Derry on a Friday night in September, and the production values are serious enough to make a proper evening of it. This is a good night out for anyone who grew up with ELO on the radio, and equally for people who have come to the music later and want to hear Mr. Blue Sky, Don’t Bring Me Down, and Livin’ Thing played loud and well.
The show is built around the full ELO sound, which means more than a guitar-and-drums rock band on stage. The touring production includes a six-piece vocal line-up, a live female string section, and a full band capable of recreating the orchestral sweep that defined records like Out of the Blue and Eldorado. On top of that, the stage show runs a dazzling light and laser display, 3D video screens modelled on ELO’s own arena touring design, and a replica of the band’s famous spaceship set piece - the one that hovered over Jeff Lynne’s real shows in the late 1970s.
Expect two hours or so of hits running from the early glam-tinged singles right through to the polished pop of the mid-1980s. ELO’s catalogue is deeper than most people remember until the songs start playing, at which point every one feels instantly familiar. The Millennium Forum’s 1,000-seat main auditorium is a comfortable size for this kind of show - close enough to feel the energy, big enough for the full production to land properly.
