At Gorey · Gorey, Co. Wexford
Designer Minds runs one of Ireland’s most popular children’s summer camps, and their Gorey edition brings a full week of hands-on science, technology, engineering, art and maths to Co. Wexford in early July. If you have a primary school-age child who comes alive pulling things apart, building robots, or asking why household goo behaves the way it does, this is a camp worth booking quickly - places fill fast across all their locations.
The programme is project-driven rather than classroom-style. Over the week children work through roughly 15 activities covering a genuinely broad range: making slime and oobleck to understand polymers, tackling real-world maths problems inside Minecraft, chromatography art (think butterfly prints and tie-dye style t-shirts), LEGO robotics with basic coding, Gravitrax marble run physics challenges, and stop-motion animation. Around a third of activities involve a screen in some way; the rest are fully hands-on.
Designer Minds splits children into two groups based on school class - Junior Group (1st to 3rd class, roughly ages 6.5 to 9) and Senior Group (4th to 6th class, ages 10 to 12) - so the pace and challenge level are matched to where each child actually is. The instructors are trained to give individual support rather than letting quicker kids race ahead and leave others behind.
The camp runs from 9:00am and pricing is contact-based for the Gorey dates - check the Designer Minds site for current options. Family discounts are available when booking two or more children, and a deposit option is typically offered if you book well in advance.
Gorey sits on the main N11/M11 corridor from Dublin, roughly an hour’s drive south of the city. By public transport, Irish Rail runs direct services from Dublin Pearse to Gorey station several times a day - the journey takes under two hours and Gorey station is walkable to the town centre. Bus Éireann’s Route 2 (Dublin to Wexford via Gorey) also stops in the town, as does Wexford Bus on the Wexford to Dublin Airport route. Street parking is generally available in Gorey town and most school and community venues used for summer camps have off-street parking as well.
Gorey is a pleasant market town with a compact centre, good coffee, and easy access to the beaches at Courtown and Ballymoney a short drive east. There is more to see in Gorey and across Co. Wexford.
