Castle Ward Summer Family Activities

At Castle Ward · Strangford, Co. Down, BT30 7LS

Castle Ward estate and gardens with family visitors exploring the grounds

Castle Ward is one of those places that genuinely earns a full day rather than a quick look around. Set on the western shore of Strangford Lough, this National Trust estate pairs an eccentric 18th-century mansion - famously split between Gothic and Palladian styles because the original owners could not agree - with 820 acres of woodland, meadow, and loughside ground. The summer family programme runs through July and August, adding a structured layer of activity on top of what is already a very capable day out for families with children of most ages.

What to expect

The Summer of Play runs from 11 July to 24 August and introduces themed play zones across the estate designed to get children moving, exploring, and using their imaginations. Alongside the seasonal programme, the permanent family offer is substantial. The woodland adventure playground has a wobbly bridge, stepping stones and balancing obstacles. The Secret Shore Nature Trail winds down to Strangford Lough, passing a bird hideout where children can look for the wildfowl that use the Lough as a feeding ground. The Georgian Farmyard - the same location used as Winterfell in the Game of Thrones series - is worth visiting for its own sake and tends to go down well with older children who recognise it. There is also a restored sunken garden based on an 1864 painting, a Victorian laundry, a corn mill, and a wildlife centre run by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. A tearoom and cafe are on site. Guided mansion tours run on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Getting there

Strangford is a small lough-side village about 60 km south of Belfast, roughly 11 km east of Downpatrick. By road from Belfast, take the A7 south to Downpatrick then the A25 east towards Strangford; Castle Ward is well signposted from the A25. From Dublin, the A1 to Newry then A2 and A25 is the straightforward route. The estate has ample free car parking on site. There is no direct public transport to Castle Ward, so a car or taxi from Downpatrick is the practical option for most visitors. A passenger ferry also runs between Strangford and Portaferry on the other side of the Lough, which makes for a scenic approach if you are coming from the Ards Peninsula.

While you’re in Strangford

The village itself is a quiet place worth a short walk - the views across the Lough Narrows to Portaferry are particularly good on a clear day. There is more to see in Strangford and across Co. Down.
