If you have been curious about South Korean cinema but never quite made it to the art-house, this is an easy way in. Omniplex Newry is hosting a free preview of Sleep, a psychological horror-thriller that premiered at Cannes’ Critics Week, directed by Jason Yu - who trained as assistant to Bong Joon-ho, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Parasite. The screening is part of BFI Escapes, a National Lottery-funded initiative that brings free independent cinema into multiplex venues across the UK and Ireland. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance.
Sleep opens on a young couple whose lives unravel when the husband begins sleepwalking and muttering “someone’s inside.” What follows is a claustrophobic thriller that plays on domestic trust as much as outright horror. Lee Sun-kyun - best known for his role in Parasite - stars alongside Jung Yu-mi as his pregnant wife. The film is set almost entirely inside their small apartment, giving it a stage-play intensity. BFI Escapes bills this as a special preview ahead of the wider UK release. Omniplex Newry is a 10-screen digital cinema inside The Quays Shopping Centre, so the picture and sound are fully up to modern multiplex standard.
Newry sits on the main Dublin-Belfast rail and bus corridor. Direct trains from Dublin Connolly take around 90 minutes; from Belfast it is roughly 50 minutes. The Quays Shopping Centre is a short walk from Newry train station on Edward Street. By road, Newry is on the A1/N1 dual carriageway between Dublin and Belfast. The Quays has its own multi-storey car park directly attached to the centre.
