Down U14 Hurling Shield: Ballygalget v East Belfast

At Ballygalget GAC · Ballygalget, Portaferry, Co. Down

Underage hurlers in a Down U14 Hurling Shield match

The Down U14 Hurling Shield gives a second competitive outlet to underage hurling clubs outside the main U14 Championship, and its Friday 7 August 2026 round is spread across four grounds. The featured tie is Ballygalget against East Belfast at Ballygalget’s own pitch on the Ards Peninsula.

What to expect

Alongside Ballygalget v East Belfast, the same evening carries St Patrick’s against Castlewellan at Ballyvarley, Ballycran against Clonduff at Ballycran, and Bredagh against Portaferry at Cherryvale. The Shield sits below the Championship as a second grade for U14 hurling, giving more clubs and players regular competitive games through the summer rather than knocking teams out early. Ballygalget is one of the county’s most successful hurling clubs at adult level, and matches at their grounds on the peninsula are a good introduction to the strong hurling culture in this corner of Down. As with all underage club fixtures, these are informal weekday evening games rather than ticketed events, with parents and club coaches making up the crowd. The Shield runs weekly through the summer alongside the Championship, giving every U14 squad a regular game even after an early loss elsewhere, with the four ties on 7 August one round in that ongoing cycle.

Getting there

Ballygalget is just outside Portaferry on the Ards Peninsula, reached via the A20 coast road along Strangford Lough. The club grounds are on the edge of the village with roadside parking.

While you’re in Portaferry
