Downpatrick Camino Pilgrim Walk

At Saint Patrick's Centre · Saint Patrick's Centre, Downpatrick, Co. Down BT30 5AQ

Saint Patrick pilgrimage walk through Downpatrick heritage sites

A guided day-walk through one of Ireland’s oldest spiritual landscapes, the Downpatrick Camino follows paths associated with Saint Patrick since the fifth century. It suits anyone curious about early Irish Christianity, keen on countryside walking, or simply wanting to spend a few hours somewhere that feels genuinely old. Groups are capped at fifteen people, which keeps it personal.

What to expect

The day starts at the Saint Patrick Centre on Market Street, where the group watches an IMAX film before heading out on foot. The six-mile route runs along the banks of the River Quoile, through country roads, and across to Saul - the site of Patrick’s first church in Ireland, built where a local chieftain gave him a barn in 432 AD. From Saul the walk continues past the Mound of Down and on to Down Cathedral, where Patrick is traditionally buried alongside Brigid and Columcille.

Lunch is served at the Barn in Saul - a fitting spot given the history. A mini-coach transfers the group back to Downpatrick afterwards. Each walker receives a stamped Camino passport, mirroring the credencial used on the Camino de Santiago. Moderate fitness is needed; sturdy footwear and waterproof layers are recommended regardless of the forecast.

Getting there

Downpatrick is roughly 35 kilometres south of Belfast. By car, take the A7 from Belfast (around 40 minutes) or the A25 from Newry. Translink Goldline coaches run from Belfast Europa Bus Centre; the journey takes about an hour. The Saint Patrick Centre is on Market Street in the town centre, close to the bus terminus. Street parking and a car park off Market Street are the nearest options.

While you’re in Downpatrick

Down Cathedral, Saint Patrick’s grave, the Down County Museum, and the Downpatrick and County Down Railway are all within a short walk of the starting point. There is more to see in Downpatrick and across Co. Down.
