DownTime SummerFest

At Multiple venues across Downpatrick · Downpatrick Town Centre, Co. Down

Summer festival with heritage, sports and music in Downpatrick

DownTime SummerFest is a free, town-wide celebration organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council that turns Downpatrick into an outdoor stage across two summer weekends. Running on 18 July and again on 2 August 2026, it spreads across multiple venues in the town centre - from the Museum Courtyard to the brand-new Urban Sports Park at Dunleath Playing Fields. It suits families with young children as much as it does teenagers looking for somewhere to kick around, and there is genuinely nothing to pay at the gate for any of it.

What to expect

The festival pulls together five strands - arts, heritage, music, food and sport - so the day moves at whatever pace you set. At the Museum Courtyard, live music fills the outdoor space and theatre performances and street acts work through the crowd. The heritage programme is a particular draw: a living history Viking encampment at the St Patrick Centre brings the early medieval period to life, and free train rides add a gentle vintage thread through the day.

At Dunleath Playing Fields, the recently opened Urban Sports Park gets properly used. The 80-metre pump track and 400m² skatepark - funded by over £439,000 from the Department for Communities - form the heart of the urban sports programme. Free BMX workshops run for children aged seven and up, delivered by Thunderaction Sports. The park itself has ramps, grind rails and a banked pump track and is already open daily at no charge, so younger visitors can return outside the festival days too.

An artisan market and food traders add a local dimension, and the overall programme runs to over 30 individual events across both weekends.

Getting there

Downpatrick is the county town of Co. Down and sits about 35 km south of Belfast. By car, take the A24 from Belfast or the A7 from the south; the drive from Belfast takes around 40 minutes. Translink operates regular bus services from Belfast Europa Bus Centre to Downpatrick (route 15X and others); journey time is roughly an hour. The town centre is compact and walkable once you arrive, and Dunleath Playing Fields is a short walk from the main square. Town centre car parks are available close to Market Street.

While you’re in Downpatrick

Downpatrick is closely tied to the story of St Patrick - the Down Cathedral and the nearby Down County Museum tell that history well, and the St Patrick Centre on Market Street gives a full introduction. There is more to see in Downpatrick and across Co. Down.
