At Bangor Town Centre and Seafront · Bangor, Co. Down
The Twelfth of July is the biggest day in the Northern Ireland Protestant calendar, and in 2026 Bangor is hosting one of the 18 main demonstrations held across the country. More than 40 lodges and 30 bands will parade through the town, making this one of the largest gatherings the North Down coast has seen on the day. If you have never watched a Twelfth parade up close, Bangor’s seaside setting makes it one of the more distinctive places to do so - the route passes through the town centre and down to Ward Park, with the marina and bay as a backdrop on a mid-summer day.
The parade steps off at noon from Ward Park on Gransha Road and follows a route through Bangor’s main streets - Castle Park Road, Abbey Street, Newtownards Road, Main Street, High Street and Hamilton Road - before returning to Ward Park. Leading the procession this year are the North Irish Dragoons, a historical re-enactment unit who will also have a campfire display and a live firing of historical weapons in the field at Ward Park after the march.
Bands taking part include a mix of flute, accordion and pipe bands drawn from Bangor District LOL No. 18 and visiting brethren from Newtownards, Upper Ards and Holywood districts. Lodges from the Ladies Association and Junior lodges also take part, including Bangor District JLOL 18, which is making its Twelfth debut. The Ward Park field is the social hub once the parade returns - expect music, stalls and families settling in for the afternoon.
Bangor sits on the north Co. Down coast about 20 km east of Belfast. Translink’s Bangor railway line runs direct from Belfast Great Victoria Street and Lanyon Place stations and is the easiest option - services run frequently and the station is a short walk from the town centre. Drivers coming from Belfast take the A2 coastal road or the A55/A20. Street parking in the town centre is limited on parade day; residential side streets off the main route fill early. The park-and-ride option from Belfast by train is the sensible call.
The marina and waterfront are worth a stroll, and the town has a good run of cafes and pubs along Main Street for before or after the parade. There is more to see in Bangor and across Co. Down.
