Strangford Festival 2026

At Strangford village · Strangford, Co. Down

Strangford Festival

The Strangford Festival is a four-day community celebration that takes over the whole village on the August bank holiday weekend each year. Running from Friday 28 August to Monday 31 August 2026, it draws together locals, visitors, and families for a mix of arts, heritage, and sport that reflects what this small loughside place actually cares about. If you are travelling through County Down in late August, this is the kind of event that makes a detour genuinely worthwhile - low-key, rooted in place, and free from the corporate polish of larger festivals.

What to expect

The festival is organised by the Strangford Festival Committee, a registered charity whose stated purpose is to advance the arts, culture and heritage of the village and support community development. Past programmes have included local history displays at Strangford Castle, which sits right at the water’s edge and needs no dressing up to be impressive. Children’s sports days and underage blitzes in soccer, Gaelic football and hurling are a regular feature, giving the weekend a genuinely mixed crowd of young families, older residents and visitors. Arts and cultural events round out the programme. The full 2026 schedule had not been published at time of writing, so check the Strangford Festival Facebook group for updates closer to the date, as events are confirmed in the weeks before the bank holiday.

Getting there

Strangford sits on the western shore of Strangford Lough, about 35 miles south of Belfast. By car, take the A7 from Belfast to Downpatrick and then follow the A25 east to Strangford - the drive takes around 45 minutes in clear traffic. From Dublin, the most direct route is the M1 north to Newry and then the A25 through Downpatrick; allow around two hours. Parking is limited in the village, as you would expect for a small harbour settlement on a busy bank holiday weekend, so arriving early or walking from one of the lanes nearby is sensible. There is no direct bus service to Strangford on a Sunday or Monday; the Ulsterbus route from Downpatrick runs on weekdays. If you are relying on public transport, check Translink journey planner for the weekend timetable before travelling.

While you’re in Strangford

The Strangford to Portaferry car ferry crosses the narrows in under ten minutes and is one of the most enjoyable short crossings in Ireland, with the tidal race through the lough entrance worth seeing for its own sake. The castle and the quayside are easy to walk around in an hour. There is more to see in Strangford and across Co. Down.
