At dlr LexIcon · Haigh Terrace, Moran Park, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
dlr LexIcon hosts a free Repair Cafe on Saturday 29 August 2026, part of the library’s “Reuse, Repair and Rediscover” strand of sustainability programming. Billed as “Furniture & Fashion Repair Café,” the session brings in volunteer menders to help visitors fix broken furniture and damaged clothing rather than sending them to landfill, in the same spirit as the repair cafe movement that has spread through libraries and community centres across Ireland and Europe.
The format is drop-in: visitors bring along an item that needs mending, whether that’s a wobbly chair, a torn hem, a stuck zip or a piece of furniture that just needs a little TLC, and volunteer fixers work alongside them to repair it on the spot where possible. It’s as much about passing on basic mending and fixing skills as it is about the individual repairs themselves, and sessions like this tend to draw a genuine cross-section of the local community, from committed zero-waste households to people who just have one broken thing sitting in a shed.
The event is listed as completely free, with no charge for taking part or for the mending help offered on the day. It runs from 11am at dlr LexIcon on Haigh Terrace, in the Moran Park building that also houses Dun Laoghaire’s main library, archive and exhibition spaces, directly across from the National Maritime Museum.
Given the drop-in, first-come nature of most repair cafes, arriving reasonably early in the session gives the best chance of getting a volunteer fixer’s attention if there’s a queue, particularly for anything that takes longer to mend.
