At Castle Island · Castle Island, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, BT74 7EF
Castle Island in Enniskillen hosts the Lough Erne Heritage Festival on Sunday, 20 September 2026, a free day of talks, demonstrations and hands-on workshops built around Fermanagh’s cultural and natural heritage. Running from 10am to 5pm, the festival is supported by Choice Housing through its Housing for All shared housing programme, and forms the autumn showcase for the Lough Erne Landscape Partnership’s ongoing conservation and heritage work around the lake.
The 2026 programme centres on traditional skills that visitors can try rather than just watch: willow weaving, archery, orchard husbandry, bushcraft and cot boat building all run as interactive sessions through the day, alongside talks on the lake’s natural and built heritage. The festival grew out of the Landscape Partnership’s wider Lough Erne Heritage programme, which has previously run as a week-long series of events across Enniskillen Castle, Broadmeadow and on-water locations to mark the completion of conservation projects around the lake. All activities and workshops are free, and while advance registration is recommended to secure a place on the more hands-on sessions, drop-in visits are also welcome across the day.
Castle Island sits on the River Erne beside Enniskillen town centre, within walking distance of Enniskillen Castle and the main shopping streets. The island is accessible on foot from the town centre; there is no dedicated car park on the island itself, so visitors typically use one of Enniskillen’s town centre car parks and walk the last stretch.
Castle Island sits right beside Enniskillen Castle on the River Erne, in the middle of Fermanagh’s county town. There is more to see across Co. Fermanagh.
