Irish Coastal Sculling Championships

At Wicklow Bay · Wicklow Harbour, Wicklow, Co. Wicklow

Coastal sculling boats racing on Wicklow Bay during a national championship

Wicklow Bay becomes the centre of Irish coastal rowing for a day on Saturday, 22 August 2026, when Rowing Ireland brings its Irish Coastal Sculling Championships to the town. Sculling, where each rower pulls two oars rather than one, is judged separately from the sweep-oar skiff racing more commonly seen at local regattas, and the national championship draws serious offshore crews from clubs around the coast, including the host club, Wicklow Rowing Club.

What to expect

Coastal sculling boats are longer and narrower than the traditional east coast skiffs, built for open water rather than short sprints, and championship racing usually covers junior, senior and masters categories for both men and women. Because it is a national title rather than a regional regatta, expect a bigger and more serious entry than a typical local event, with clubs travelling from around the country to compete on what is generally a fair, sheltered stretch of water inside Wicklow Bay. Racing tends to run through the morning and into the afternoon as categories are worked through. Wicklow Rowing Club, as hosts, will have members marshalling on the water and organising things onshore, and the club’s own crews will be racing on home water in front of a local crowd. It is a free event to watch from the harbour and the East Pier.

Getting there

Wicklow Harbour is at the heart of Wicklow town, within easy walking distance of the train station and the town’s shops and pubs. Wicklow town is served by regular Irish Rail services from Dublin and Rosslare, making the train a practical option for spectators travelling any distance.

While you’re in Wicklow

Wicklow town sits right on the bay where the racing takes place, with its harbour, historic gaol and seafront all within a short walk of each other. There is more to see in Wicklow and across Co. Wicklow.
