What to Expect

Tales of Acorn Wood Live! brings Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s picture book characters to the stage for children of all ages. The show is a lift-the-flap style theatrical experience built around four Acorn Wood stories: Fox searching for his missing socks, Rabbit’s nap disturbed by a mysterious noise, Pig and Hen playing hide and seek, and Postman Bear preparing a surprise for his friends. It comes from the team behind Dear Zoo Live and Dear Santa, and uses puppetry, songs and interactive moments to keep very young audiences engaged, often as their first taste of live theatre. Expect toe-tapping songs and plenty of moments for children to join in from their seats rather than sit and watch quietly throughout. Donaldson and Scheffler are the writer-illustrator duo behind The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and Zog, and Acorn Wood is their board-book series written specifically for babies and very young children, following the same cast of woodland friends across four short, connected stories. The stage adaptation keeps that scale in mind, with a shorter running time and a simpler, more interactive format than the duo’s shows aimed at slightly older children.

Getting There

The National Opera House is in the centre of Wexford Town on High Street, within walking distance of the train and bus station and the town’s main car parks. Wexford Town itself has plenty of cafes and shops within a short walk of the theatre, along with the harbour-front quays, so it is easy to build a full day out around a 2:30pm show.
