Kerry County Development Plan Variation No. 4 Consultation Closes

What to Expect

Kerry County Council’s public consultation on Variation No. 4, the material alterations to the Kerry County Development Plan 2022-2028, runs through most of the summer and closes on Friday 28 August 2026. The variation covers changes to the county’s statutory planning framework, and residents, businesses and community groups can inspect the material and lodge a written submission or observation before the deadline. Material has been on public display since 30 July 2026 at several locations around the county, alongside the council’s own online consultation portal, giving people outside Tralee a chance to review the documents locally rather than travelling in.

The County Development Plan is the statutory document that guides where housing, business and infrastructure can be built across Kerry over its six year lifespan, so a material alteration like this one can affect zoning, settlement boundaries or policy wording in specific areas rather than rewriting the plan from scratch. Anyone with an interest, whether a homeowner, a community group or a local business, is entitled to make a written submission during the consultation window, and those submissions become part of the public record the council considers before adopting the final variation. This is one stage in a longer statutory process that started earlier in the year and will continue after the submission deadline with the council reviewing what has come in.

• Free to view and to make a submission, no booking required to inspect the documents.

Getting There

The Planning Department is based at County Buildings on Rathass, on the eastern edge of Tralee town, with visitor parking on site. The Listowel and Ballybunion inspection points are more convenient for anyone in north Kerry.
