Summer in Killarney Outdoor Cinema

At Killarney town (outdoor) · Killarney, Co. Kerry

Outdoor cinema screening in Killarney

On a July evening in Killarney town, a big outdoor screen goes up, a SPIN South West DJ takes over the speakers, and the whole thing is free. This is the outdoor cinema night that sits at the heart of the Summer in Killarney Festival - a month-long programme running from late June through to the end of July. It is the kind of event that suits families, couples and anyone who happens to be in town and fancies a proper summer night out under the Kerry sky.

What to expect

The screening takes place on 20 July as part of the Summer in Killarney Festival, organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce with backing from Fáilte Ireland and Kerry County Council. A SPIN South West DJ provides the warm-up before the film rolls, so the atmosphere is more summer party than quiet multiplex. The festival itself runs a themed programme this year around 250 years of Irish and American cultural links, so expect a programme with a bit of character behind it. Organisers recommend booking ahead - the event is free but places are limited enough that it is worth reserving a spot via killarney.ie before you head out.

Getting there

Killarney town is well connected. From Dublin, the M7 takes you south-west and you join the N22 into Killarney - allow roughly three hours by car. Bus Eireann runs a direct service from Dublin Busáras and from Cork, and Killarney has its own train station on the Cork to Tralee line with several services daily. The town centre is compact and walkable. Street parking is available around the town, and there are car parks off New Street and at the INEC. On a busy summer evening with the Killarney Races also running in the same July window, arriving early or coming in by bus is the smarter call.

While you’re in Killarney

The outdoor cinema falls right in the middle of one of Killarney’s busiest stretches of the year, with the Races, the Regatta, and the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle all on the calendar around the same time. If you are making a trip of it, Killarney National Park is on the doorstep - the lakes, Muckross House, and the Gap of Dunloe are all within easy reach. There is more to see in Killarney and across Co. Kerry.
