At Naas Athletics Track · Naas Athletics Track, Naas, Co. Kildare
Track and field athletics has a long pull for spectators who enjoy watching sport in its most stripped-back form - person against clock, person against distance, person against the bar. The Kildare Athletics Summer Track and Field Championships bring together athletes from clubs all across the county for an afternoon of competitive athletics at Naas Athletics Track. It is free to get in, runs through the long Kildare summer, and draws a genuine club crowd. If you like sport without the fanfare, this is a good afternoon out.
The championships cover the full range of track and field disciplines - sprints, middle-distance and longer runs, hurdles, relays, and the field events: long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, and javelin. Athletes compete across age groups, from juveniles up through seniors and masters, so there is something moving on the infield or the track at almost every moment of the afternoon.
Naas Athletics Track is based at the Naas Sports Centre on the Caragh Road. The facility has an all-weather tartan sprint strip as well as a grass track, and changing rooms are on site. The atmosphere at county-level championships tends to be relaxed but focused - club coaches call out splits, parents stand at the rail, and the athletes are genuinely competing for county titles. It is a proper athletics day, not a fun run.
Kildare is well-represented at national level in middle distance and field events, so the standard on show tends to be high for a county championship. Bring a folding chair or rug if the weather is good; spectator seating can be limited at track meets.
Naas is just off the M7, making it one of the most straightforward towns in Leinster to drive to from Dublin, Limerick, or the midlands. From Dublin it is roughly 30 km along the M7 - take the Naas North or Naas South exit and follow signs for the town. Parking is available at the Sports Centre on the Caragh Road.
By public transport, Bus Eireann and Dublin Coach run regular services between Dublin city centre and Naas. The Sports Centre is a manageable walk from the town centre, or a short taxi ride if the sun has not been cooperating.
Naas town centre is compact and easy to walk, with good cafes and pubs if you want to eat before or after. The Curragh - Ireland’s primary flat-racing racecourse - is only a short drive away if racing is on the same weekend. There is more to see in Naas and across Co. Kildare.
