At Various · County Kildare
Four clubs from across County Kildare go head to head in the Group A stage of the National Electrical Wholesalers Kildare Intermediate Football Championship. Leixlip, Suncroft, Confey and Straffan each play three round-robin fixtures between August and September 2026, with places in the knock-out rounds on the line. Club football at this level is tight, local and fiercely competitive - the kind of afternoon where you stand behind the goal with neighbours and a flask of tea rather than in a numbered seat, and where every score matters because the margin between progression and exit can come down to a single game.
The group stage runs across three rounds. Round 1 takes place on 8 August, with Leixlip facing Suncroft at Conneff Park in Clane (5:00 PM) and Confey taking on Straffan at Cedral St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge (5:15 PM). Round 2 follows on 22-23 August: Confey vs Leixlip again at Conneff Park (3:30 PM on the 22nd) and Straffan vs Suncroft at Manguard Park Hawkfield (1:30 PM on the 23rd). Round 3 closes out on 4 September with both fixtures at Manguard Park, Hawkfield from 8:00 PM. Each of the four clubs plays every other club once, so the full picture only emerges on that final night.
Intermediate championship sits a step below senior - these are clubs fighting their way back up or consolidating a level, and the standard is strong. County grounds like Cedral St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge, which was substantially redeveloped and reopened in 2024 at a cost of around €18 million, provide a genuinely impressive stage for club fixtures at this level.
The three venues are spread across the county. Conneff Park is in Clane, roughly 30 km south-west of Dublin city - follow the N7 and come off at the Clane junction, or take the Go-Ahead Ireland Route 120 bus to the Clane Aldi stop, a short walk away. Cedral St Conleth’s Park is in Newbridge town centre; Newbridge has a direct rail link from Heuston Station (about 35 minutes on the Dublin-Limerick/Cork line). Manguard Park Hawkfield is just outside Newbridge and is best reached by car. Parking at GAA grounds in Kildare is generally available at or near the venue; arrive 20-30 minutes early for the evening fixtures.
The town of Kildare sits close by - the Japanese Gardens and the National Stud are worth a visit if you have time before a match. There is more to see in Kildare and across Co. Kildare.
