Leitrim Volunteer Centre runs a Child Protection Awareness Training session on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, at the Margaret of New Orleans Centre in Tully, just outside Carrigallen. The course is delivered by Alexander Fay, a child protection trainer with the National Youth Council of Ireland, and is aimed at staff and volunteers who work with young people and carry general safeguarding responsibilities. It runs from 10am to 2pm, and places are limited, so early registration through the volunteer centre is advised.
The session is a formal safeguarding course rather than a talk or drop-in briefing, run over a four-hour block from 10am to 2pm. Trainer Alexander Fay works with the National Youth Council of Ireland’s child protection training team, delivering the kind of structured module that clubs, youth groups and community organisations across Leitrim need on file to meet safeguarding requirements for anyone working with under-18s. Expect coverage of recognising and responding to child welfare concerns, reporting procedures, and the general safeguarding responsibilities that come with coaching, mentoring or supervising young people in a voluntary capacity. It is aimed squarely at staff and volunteers already active in youth-facing roles rather than the general public, and Leitrim Volunteer Centre organises it as part of its ongoing training programme for the county’s voluntary and community sector. Booking is through a short online form, and the centre has flagged that spaces are limited.
The venue is in Tully, on the outskirts of Carrigallen in east Leitrim near the Cavan border. Carrigallen itself is about 25 minutes from Ballinamore and 30 minutes from Cavan town by car. There is no rail or scheduled bus service into Tully directly, so attendees should plan to drive or arrange a lift.
Tully is best known as the birthplace of Margaret Haughery, who emigrated from here in the 1810s and became one of New Orleans’ great philanthropists, feeding the city’s orphanages through her bakery and dairy business, a fitting local connection for a training day about protecting children.
