At Lough Rynn Castle Hotel · Lough Rynn, Mohill, Co. Leitrim
Every September, the grounds of Lough Rynn Castle Hotel fill with the smell of diesel, the clatter of old machinery and the kind of crowd that still knows how to thresh a field by hand. The Lough Rynn Harvest Festival and Vintage Day is one of the most well-established free community events on the Leitrim calendar - now in its 29th year - and it draws vintage enthusiasts, families and curious visitors from right across Ireland. If you have any interest in how farming actually worked before the age of computers, or you simply want a full Sunday out in genuinely beautiful surroundings, this is worth the drive.
The festival is organised by the Bornacoola Development Association, and they run a tight, good-natured ship. The centrepiece is a large display of vintage tractors, farm machinery and steam engines - many no longer in working use anywhere else - alongside classic cars and commercial vehicles from earlier decades. Alongside the machinery, there are demonstrations of traditional farm arts and crafts, threshing re-enactments, and trade stands covering everything from auto jumble to local produce.
Children’s amusements and trampolines keep younger visitors occupied, while a food village covers the afternoon appetite. The festival also brings in country music entertainment - past years have featured headline acts like Patrick Feeney - and street theatre adds an unpredictable layer to the afternoon. All proceeds go back into Bornacoola Community Development, funding local GAA clubs, youth groups, active age societies and drama groups in the area. Free car parking is provided right beside the main venue.
Lough Rynn Castle Hotel sits on the shore of Lough Rynn, a short distance outside Mohill in south Co. Leitrim. From Dublin, take the N4 west past Mullingar and Longford; Mohill is well signposted from there via the R202. From Carrick-on-Shannon (roughly 20 minutes), take the N4 east to the Dromod junction and follow local roads south to Mohill. Bus Eireann routes serve Mohill on the Dublin to Sligo corridor, but services on Sundays are limited, so checking timetables in advance is sensible. The hotel grounds have ample on-site parking.
Mohill is a quiet market town on the edge of the Leitrim lakeland, close to Lough Rynn itself and a short drive from the Shannon-Erne Waterway. The castle estate has its own grounds worth a wander before or after the festival. There is more to see in Mohill and across Co. Leitrim.
