At Cedral St Conleth's Park · Newbridge, Co. Kildare
Maynooth GAA step into the Joe Mallon Motors Senior Football Championship in late August, taking on three other north and mid-Kildare clubs through a round-robin group stage that runs into mid-September. Group B pits Maynooth against Caragh, Carbury, and Sarsfields - three competitive clubs with their own championship ambitions - so the standard of football should be high from the first whistle. It is the kind of local championship fare that draws genuinely passionate crowds: neighbours, club stalwarts, and GAA followers who want to see their parish tested against the best in the county.
All three of Maynooth’s group matches are scheduled at Cedral St Conleth’s Park in Newbridge, Kildare’s county ground. The fixture list runs:
The ground itself is worth arriving early for. St Conleth’s reopened in late 2024 after an €18 million redevelopment that added a new 3,000-seat stand, modern floodlights, upgraded dressing rooms, and a Club Kildare hospitality lounge. Overall capacity is now 15,000. The pitch dimensions were also brought up to national standards, giving players more room and spectators cleaner sightlines. It is one of the better-appointed county grounds in Leinster, and the atmosphere for a competitive championship day is genuine.
Maynooth GAA has a strong footballing tradition in north Kildare. The club draws largely from the university town of Maynooth, whose population has grown sharply in recent years, and the club reflects that growth with good playing numbers across all grades.
Cedral St Conleth’s Park is on the southern edge of Newbridge town, roughly 35 km south-west of Dublin. By road, take the M7 motorway and exit at junction 11 (Newbridge North) or junction 12 (Newbridge South); the ground is well signed from both. Parking is available at and around the venue, though spaces fill quickly on championship days - allow extra time or use the town centre car parks and walk down.
By train, Irish Rail runs regular services on the Dublin Heuston - Kildare line, stopping at Newbridge station. The walk from the station to the ground is about 15 minutes through the town. Bus Éireann and GoBus also serve Newbridge from Dublin.
Newbridge is a busy market town with a strong retail and café scene along its main street. The Newbridge Silverware Visitor Centre, a short drive from the ground, is worth a look if you have time before or after the match. There is more to see in Newbridge and across Co. Kildare.
