The Ballina Snooker Championship is the club’s own title night - the evening when members of Ballina Century Snooker Club compete to settle who is the best player in the room. If you have any interest in watching competitive snooker up close, this is the kind of event the big televised tournaments cannot replicate: a small club, a handful of tables, and players who have been practising on those exact cloths all year. Admission is free.
Ballina Century Snooker Club is an SBI-registered club based at Unit 11 Abbey Business Park, Ardnaree, on the north side of Ballina town. The championship format follows the familiar single-elimination or round-robin structure typical of club-level competition in Ireland, with frames played out in the quieter, focused atmosphere of a proper snooker room rather than a sports bar.
Play begins at 7:00pm. Expect tight frames, the occasional fluked long red, and the kind of supportive crowd banter that makes club sport in a small town enjoyable. The championship is a members’ competition, so the players know each other well - which adds to rather than detracts from the tension. Refreshments are available at the club.
Ballina is the largest town in north Mayo, sitting on the River Moy about 60 km north-east of Castlebar. By road: the N26 connects it to Castlebar and the M17/M18 motorway network; the N59 runs west towards Crossmolina and Westport; the N57 heads north-east towards Sligo. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Galway, Sligo, and Dublin via Castlebar. Abbey Business Park is a short drive from the town centre. Parking is available at the business park.
