At Ballina Squash Club · Ballina, Co. Mayo
The Ballina Squash Club Championship is the club’s premier annual competition, bringing together players from across the county to compete on two of the best squash courts in Connacht. If you follow squash - or you play yourself and want to see the standard up close - this is a proper local championship, contested by people who train here week in week out. Evening knockout rounds have a genuine atmosphere that casual sport rarely delivers.
The championship is hosted at Ballina Stephenites Sports Centre on Lord Edward Street, home to Ballina Squash Club. The facility runs two indoor courts to a high standard, with one glass-back court that has been refurbished with a new front wall surface, LED lighting, underfloor heating and a freshly laid floor. Viewing galleries run alongside both courts, so spectators can follow the play from a proper vantage point without being in the way. Shower and changing facilities are on site for competing players.
The format is a singles championship, with members competing across the evening. Club championship nights in Ireland typically run a series of matches back to back, so expect two to three hours of competitive squash. The standard will vary by round but the later stages tend to draw out the club’s top players and the rallies get longer. Entry from EUR 10 covers the evening.
Ballina sits in north-east Mayo, about 60 km north of Castlebar on the N26 / N57. By car from Dublin it is roughly two and a half hours via the M4 and N5. Bus Eireann runs services to Ballina town from Dublin, Sligo and Castlebar. Lord Edward Street is close to the town centre, and parking is available at the GAA grounds.
Ballina is Mayo’s largest town, on the River Moy - one of Ireland’s most productive salmon rivers. A squash evening gives you an excuse to arrive earlier in the day and walk the quays or take the short drive out to the Céide Fields, one of the oldest field systems in the world. There is more to see in Ballina and across Co. Mayo.
