At Ballina Town FC Grounds · Ballina, Co. Mayo
A summer Sunday afternoon league fixture at Belleek Park is as good a way as any to get under the skin of Ballina. Ballina Town FC has been a fixture in this town since 1961 - founded originally as St Patrick’s F.C. and renamed within months to reflect where home really is. Their senior men’s side competes in the Mayo Association Football League, and a home match here is local sport at its most genuine: no ticketing queues, no corporate boxes, just the game and whoever turns up.
The ground at Belleek Park sits right on the edge of the River Moy, with Belleek Woods running alongside it - an unlikely picturesque backdrop for a league afternoon. The main playing surface, the Pete Murray Pitch, is one of the better grass pitches in Connacht and the club has spent years getting it right. There is a floodlit all-weather pitch and a proper clubhouse on site, which means you can get a warm drink or something to eat without leaving the ground.
Admission is free for spectators, so this is an easy afternoon out for families. The atmosphere at club-level fixtures in the Mayo league tends to be relaxed and knowledgeable - plenty of people who know the players, plenty of banter from the sideline. Bring a layer regardless of the weather; late August in Mayo can go either way.
Ballina sits on the N26 and is easily reached by road from both Castlebar (about 40 minutes) and Sligo (45 minutes). Coming from Dublin, the N5 takes you west to Castlebar and on from there. Bus Eireann runs services to Ballina from Westport and Sligo, and the town is on the Western rail corridor with a station on Bohernasup Road. Belleek Park is on the western edge of town along the river - local signage or Google Maps will get you there, and parking is available at the venue.
Ballina is a proper working town on the Moy - well known for salmon fishing but worth a longer look for its pubs, market, and the walking trails through Belleek Woods, which are right on the doorstep of the ground. There is more to see in Ballina and across Co. Mayo.
