At Croagh Patrick · Croagh Patrick, Westport, Co. Mayo

Croagh Patrick pilgrimage celebration

What to Expect

Reek Sunday is Ireland’s largest annual pilgrimage and one of Europe’s most significant Catholic pilgrimage events. Thousands of pilgrims from across Ireland and beyond climb the 764-meter (2,507-foot) Croagh Patrick mountain to attend Mass at the summit. The day combines spiritual devotion, Irish tradition, and community celebration. Masses are celebrated throughout the day on the mountain, with the main celebrations typically occurring throughout morning and afternoon.

Good to Know

Reek Sunday draws tens of thousands of pilgrims. The climb typically takes 1-3 hours depending on fitness level. Wear appropriate footwear and weather protection - Irish mountain weather is unpredictable. Many pilgrims climb barefoot or on their knees as a traditional act of penance. Water and refreshments are limited on the mountain. Arrive early for parking and allow extra time for crowds. The event is physically demanding and not suitable for those with certain health conditions.
