Leinster GAA Football Club Championship - Mayo Club Quarter-final

At MacHale Park (Hastings Insurance MacHale Park) · Castlebar, Co. Mayo

GAA football championship

Club GAA football in August is a different animal to the county game. The pace is tighter, the stakes more local, and the crowd at MacHale Park tends to be made up of people who genuinely know the players on the pitch. This quarter-final fixture, organised by Mayo GAA, brings the county’s club champions into a provincial championship tie - the kind of match that can define a club’s season and send a parish into the sort of quiet excitement that lasts all week. If you have any passing interest in Gaelic football, this is a fine afternoon to spend in Castlebar.

What to expect

Hastings Insurance MacHale Park is the home of Mayo GAA and one of the finest provincial venues in the country. First opened in 1931, it has been redeveloped steadily over the decades - a major €16 million renovation completed in 2008 added a large new stand, underground training facilities and a museum. The current capacity sits around 28,000, though club championship quarter-finals typically draw a loyal but manageable crowd, giving you room to breathe and a clear view from most parts of the ground.

Club championship football tends to be direct and physical. The Mayo club taking part will have won their county title to earn this place, so the standard is high. Throw-in is at 3:00pm. Admission is priced from €10 - bring cash as a back-up, though most GAA venues now accept card at the turnstiles. The specific club pairing will be confirmed closer to the date on the Mayo GAA website.

Getting there

Castlebar sits roughly in the centre of County Mayo on the N5 national primary road, about 260 km from Dublin (roughly three hours by road). From Galway, it is around 90 km on the N84. Bus Éireann runs regular services between Dublin, Galway and Castlebar; the Bus Éireann route 440 links the town to the national network. Castlebar railway station, on the Westport to Dublin Heuston line, puts the ground within a 15-minute walk. MacHale Park is centrally located in town, and on-street parking and nearby car parks are used routinely on match days - arrive 30 to 45 minutes before throw-in to settle in comfortably.

While you’re in Castlebar

Castlebar is a busy market town with a good range of cafés, pubs and restaurants in the centre, all within easy reach of the stadium. The area around Lough Lannagh, just off the town, is a pleasant spot for a walk before or after the match. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
