At Various club grounds · County Mayo
Summer evenings in Mayo take on a particular energy when underage championship football is in full swing. These are the matches where tomorrow’s county players cut their teeth - scrappy, competitive, and played with the kind of intensity that only comes from representing your club in front of neighbours and family. Free to attend and held at club grounds right across the county, it is one of the most authentic ways to experience GAA culture without the crowds or cost of a senior fixture.
Mayo GAA runs a county-wide underage championship throughout June, July and August, covering age groups from U12 up to Minor (Under 17). The county is divided into geographic regions - North, South, East and West Mayo - so most matches take place at a local club ground within easy reach. The standard of football at U14 and U16 level can genuinely surprise visitors; these are well-organised competitive championships, not casual blowouts.
Fixtures are spread across evenings and weekends, with multiple matches often running on the same date at different venues. Club grounds are typically compact and intimate - you stand close to the pitch, the atmosphere is lively, and GAA families at the gate will happily point a stranger in the right direction. Bring something waterproof; July in Mayo is July in Connacht.
Castlebar is the county town and central hub for Mayo. It sits on the N5 from Westport and Roscommon, and on the N84 from Galway via Ballinrobe. Bus Eireann runs services from Galway, Westport and Ballina into Castlebar Bus Station. For matches at club grounds outside the town, a car is necessary - Mayo’s club network stretches across rural townlands where public transport does not reach. Parking at GAA grounds is generally free and informal, in a field or car park beside the pitch.
Castlebar has a solid town centre with good cafes and pubs, and MacHale Park - home of Mayo GAA - is worth a look even on a non-match day. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
