If you have a child aged 5 to 16 who loves singing, dancing, or acting - or who has never tried any of them but is curious - the Stageworld Performing Arts summer workshop week at Linenhall Arts Centre is worth putting in the diary. Run across five mornings in early July, it brings together three experienced Mayo-based tutors for a musical theatre camp that ends with a public showcase on the Friday afternoon. Children work each day and perform what they have learned by the end of the week.
Workshops run Monday to Friday from 10am to 1:30pm, with children grouped by age. The three tutors each bring a distinct specialism: Anne Marie Gibbons is a singer and vocal coach; Sarah Callaghan is the Director of the Mayo School of Ballet; and June Allison-Keane is the Director of the Mayo Performance Academy. Daily sessions cover singing, dancing, and drama - the three strands of musical theatre - rotating through each discipline across the week.
The week closes with a performance showcase on Friday 5 July, where participants show what they have been working on to family and friends in a real arts venue setting. Advance booking is essential; contact the organisers directly by phone at 087 679 8748 or by email at mayovocalacademy@aol.com.
Castlebar is the county town of Mayo and easy to reach from most of the county. The N5 connects it to Westport (around 20 minutes) and Roscommon to the east; the N84 runs south towards Galway. Bus Eireann serves Castlebar from Galway, Westport, and Dublin on Expressway routes. Linenhall Arts Centre sits in the town centre, within easy walking distance of the main street and nearby car parks.
The Mall, a tree-lined promenade near the town centre, is a good spot for a walk before or after a morning session, and the town has a solid range of cafes for lunch afterwards. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
