Wilderland Productions brings “The Reincarnation of Cornelius Agrippa” to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for one night, 3 September 2026. The two-act play centres on the real historical figure Cornelius Agrippa, who in 1519 defended a woman accused of witchcraft in Metz, France, said to be the only recorded instance of its kind in history. The production reimagines Agrippa’s legendary trial and sets it alongside a contemporary exploration of its consequences, asking why he has returned “to defend the condemned again.” The main piece runs 85 minutes with a 15-minute interval.
This is a touring production that has been on the road around Ireland since late 2024, so the Castlebar date is one stop on a longer national run rather than a local premiere. The Linenhall has a long-standing reputation for programming serious, text-led drama alongside its music and visual arts offering, and this piece fits that strand of its autumn season, aimed at audiences interested in history-based drama with a contemporary edge rather than light entertainment.
The production leans on Agrippa’s real trial record as its starting point before pushing into more speculative territory about what his presence in the modern day would mean, so audiences familiar with the history of witch trials in early modern Europe will find extra layers in the writing, while newcomers to the story get a self-contained account of the case itself.
