A summer evening of live amateur boxing in Westport, with local and visiting fighters competing across weight divisions in front of a home crowd. Organised by Westport Amateur Boxing Club, this is proper competitive sport - not an exhibition - and the atmosphere inside a packed community hall on fight night is something that surprises a lot of first-timers. If you have never watched amateur boxing up close, this is a good introduction: fast bouts, clear scoring, and fighters who have put in serious training time to be there.
Multiple bouts run through the night, with boxers from the host club and visiting clubs facing off in a range of weight categories. Amateur boxing under IABA (now Boxing Ireland) rules is scored on clean punching and technique rather than knockouts, so the action rewards attention. Expect a lively crowd - families, club supporters, and boxing fans who know the fighters by name. The bout schedule typically runs from first bell to last over two to three hours. Refreshments are available at the venue. Doors open ahead of the 7pm start, so arriving early is advisable to get a good seat.
Westport sits on the N5 from Castlebar and is about an hour’s drive from Galway city via the N84. From Dublin, the N4 to Longford then the N5 westward is the main route - allow roughly three hours. Irish Rail runs services to Westport from Dublin Heuston, and Bus Eireann connects the town to Galway, Castlebar and beyond. The Community Hall is in Westport town centre, within easy walking distance of the main street. Street parking is available around the town centre, and there are pay car parks a short walk from the hall.
