At Westport Harbour · Westport, Co. Mayo
Every August, Westport Harbour fills before dawn with swimmers in wetsuits, bikes racked in transition, and the particular focused quiet of people who have trained hard and are finally here. The Westport Triathlon is a sprint distance event organised by Westport Triathlon Club - a race that draws seasoned competitors chasing a fast time and first-timers who want a proper test of fitness in one of the most scenic settings in Ireland. If you have been thinking about entering your first triathlon, or returning for another crack at the course, this is a well-run event with a welcoming club behind it.
The race starts from Westport Harbour with a sea swim in Clew Bay, open water with the islands of the bay spread out ahead of you. From the water, athletes move into the cycle leg, heading out on roads toward Croagh Patrick - Ireland’s holy mountain sits on the horizon for much of the ride. The run follows along the Westport Greenway, a traffic-free former railway line between Westport and Achill. The course rewards training but does not punish newcomers who pace sensibly. The 8:00am start is early, which keeps temperatures down and gives the whole morning a good energy. Race numbers, transition areas and timing are all included in the entry fee. Registration typically closes around a week before race day.
Westport is served by regular trains from Dublin Heuston - the journey takes just under four hours and drops you close to the town centre, a short walk from the harbour. By road from Dublin, the N4 and N5 are the main routes west, roughly 260km. From Galway, the N84 north takes about an hour. Parking is available at the harbour and around town, though if you are travelling with a bike, arrive early to allow time for transition set-up.
The tree-lined Mall, the traditional music pubs, and the closeness of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick make Westport a natural base for a day or two either side of the race. There is more to see in Westport and across Co. Mayo.
