At Headfort Arms Hotel · John Street, Kells, Co. Meath
The Headfort Arms is a long-standing family-run hotel on Kells’ main street, and its Sparkling Afternoon Tea is one of the more consistent food-and-drink offerings in the town, available by reservation rather than tied to a single weekly slot. The spread is built in-house from locally sourced ingredients: a tier of delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with cream and jam, and a selection of sweet pastries, served with a glass of something sparkling to open the sitting. Where it lands physically changes with the season: in spring and summer it is served out in the sun-drenched Headfort Garden, weather permitting, while through autumn and winter it moves indoors to the Lounge, taken by the fireplace instead. As an add-on option, a Sparkling Afternoon Tea for two is priced at €35 per person and can be paired with an overnight stay or a hotel package, though it is also bookable as a stand-alone visit. The kitchen caters for dietary requirements on request, and given the hotel also runs a busy calendar of concerts, comedy nights and festival weekends in its garden and function rooms, pre-booking at least 48 hours ahead is essential to avoid a clash with other events on the day.
Headfort Arms is on John Street in the centre of Kells, on the N3 road from Dublin. Bus Éireann Dublin-Cavan services stop in Kells town centre, a short walk from the hotel.
