National Heritage Week 2026

Every August, communities across Ireland open doors that are otherwise closed - to old mills, medieval undercrofts, estate walled gardens, and family archives. National Heritage Week is when that happens at scale, and Tipperary, with its extraordinary depth of medieval and vernacular heritage, gives the week particular weight. Running from the 15th to the 23rd of August 2026 under the national theme “Heritage at Risk”, the Tipperary programme spans guided tours, hands-on workshops, historical talks, and demonstrations at sites ranging from Cashel to Clonmel, Nenagh to Carrick-on-Suir. It suits curious visitors, local history enthusiasts, families looking for something genuinely educational, and anyone who wants to understand the county beyond the road signs.

What to expect

The 2026 theme - Heritage at Risk - runs through everything. Expect events that shine a light on endangered skills and threatened places: stone carving workshops led by a master stonemason, traditional thatching demonstrations, vernacular woodcraft sessions, and textile clinics covering knitting and embroidery. In Nenagh, the programme has included free sketching workshops at Nenagh Castle and craft sessions for children. Across the county, historians and archaeologists lead guided walks and talks at medieval sites. Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle, Ormond Castle in Carrick-on-Suir, and the Main Guard in Clonmel have all featured in previous years’ programmes, and local community groups organise additional smaller events at parish level that can be the most rewarding of all.

The full event listing goes live at heritageweek.ie and is updated continuously as groups register their events. It is searchable by county, so filtering to Tipperary gives you the complete picture for the week.

Getting there

Tipperary town sits on the main Limerick to Dublin rail line, with regular services from Limerick Junction. The M8 motorway runs through the county, putting Cashel about 20 minutes from the Cashel/Cahir junction. Clonmel is served by bus from Waterford, Cork, and Dublin. Individual Heritage Week events are held at specific sites across the county, so checking the venue before you travel is worth doing - some rural events have limited parking and are better reached by bicycle or on foot from the nearest town. Parking in Tipperary town, Cashel, Cahir, and Nenagh is generally straightforward during August.
