At Various venues across County Armagh · Various, Co. Armagh
Every August, County Armagh throws open its doors for National Heritage Week - nine days of guided walks, talks, open days and storytelling that are free to attend and genuinely revealing about this ancient county. The 2026 theme is “Heritage at Risk”, asking communities to look honestly at what threatens our built, cultural and natural inheritance. For anyone curious about Irish history, archaeology or local tradition, this is a chance to get inside places not normally accessible and hear from people who know them best.
Events are organised by community groups, historical societies and heritage sites across the county. In recent years, participating Armagh venues have included Navan Centre and Fort - the site of Emain Macha, the ancient seat of the Kings of Ulster, linked in mythology to Cú Chulainn and the Red Branch Knights - and Armagh County Museum, the oldest county museum in Ireland, whose collections on the Georgian Mall span archaeology, fine art, costume and local history.
Expect guided walks to earthworks and archaeological sites, evening talks on placenames and townlands, and open days at buildings not usually accessible. The 2026 theme places particular emphasis on traditional crafts - thatching, stone masonry, blacksmithing - so demonstrations may feature alongside the usual talks and tours. Specific Armagh listings appear on heritageweek.ie in July, a few weeks before the week begins.
Armagh city is about 40 minutes south-west of Belfast on the A3, and roughly an hour north of Dublin via the M1. Parking in Armagh city centre is generally easy, with car parks near the Mall and off Russell Street. Events outside the city will have their own directions on heritageweek.ie.
Armagh has been the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland for over 1,500 years, with two Saint Patrick’s Cathedrals on neighbouring hills and a Georgian city centre worth an afternoon. A Heritage Week visit sits naturally alongside a walk up to the cathedrals or a trip out to Navan Fort. There is more to see in Armagh and across Co. Armagh.
