At Birr Theatre & Arts Centre · Oxmantown Mall, Birr, Co. Offaly
OFFline Film Festival, running since 2010, returns to Birr Theatre & Arts Centre from Wednesday, 7 October to Sunday, 11 October 2026, with expanded screenings in Tullamore and Banagher. Based at Birr Theatre and supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development and Pobal through the Community Services Programme, the festival showcases Irish and international short and feature film alongside industry workshops, and has built a reputation as one of the Midlands’ leading film events for both audiences and working filmmakers.
The festival runs across three strands: competitive short film screenings with a top prize of €5,000, industry workshops for people making or wanting to make films, and a broader programme of Irish and international feature and documentary screenings. A filmmaking challenge sees teams write, shoot and edit a short film over three days during the festival, with the winning team going on to represent OFFline at the Galway Film Fleadh. Family and schools programming runs alongside the main festival, including a family film screening of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox, primary and secondary school screenings, and children’s workshops covering optical toys, storyboarding and stop-motion animation. The festival closes with its Meet the Filmmakers event on Friday, 11 October.
Birr Theatre & Arts Centre is on Oxmantown Mall in Birr town centre, within walking distance of Main Street and the town’s public car parks. Some screenings take place at venues in Tullamore and Banagher; check the festival website for locations.
A festival weekend is a good reason to explore Birr beyond the cinema seats, with Birr Castle Demesne and the town’s Georgian streets both within walking distance of the theatre. There is more to see across Co. Offaly.
