What to Expect

Now in its sixth year, One Voice Festival: A Festival of Memories fills the Wexford Arts Centre stage with eight short monologue plays performed across three evenings. Each piece is written and performed as a single voice telling a true, or true-feeling, story about memory, and this year’s selection is loosely inspired by the centre’s “Memory of a Free Festival” exhibition, with several pieces reaching back to the Carnsore Point Anti-Nuclear Festival that ran on the Wexford coast between 1978 and 1981. Two of the confirmed pieces are “Pakie’s Pipe” and “Waiting for Jack Lemmon”, performed by a cast that includes Susan Anderson and Dermot Asple. The festival is directed by Paul Walsh, whose company Paul Walsh Productions co-presents the event with Wexford Arts Centre, and carries an original score composed by Gary Stephens. The tone shifts across the three nights from comic to melancholy, since the monologue format lets each writer take a personal angle on the shared theme of memory rather than building a single connected show.

• This is a seated indoor show in the Arts Centre’s theatre space, suited to an adult audience given the reflective, sometimes serious subject matter.
• The festival returns annually each August built around new writing rather than repeated material, so the monologues change year to year even though the “One Voice” format stays the same.

Getting There

Wexford Arts Centre is on Cornmarket in the centre of Wexford town, a short walk from the main shopping streets and the train station. Public car parks are available nearby on South Main Street and around the town centre.
