At Portadown People's Park · Portadown People's Park, Portadown, Co. Armagh, BT63 5FD
Portadown People’s Park throws open its gates each August for a free Family Fun Day that has become one of the most popular summer outings in Co. Armagh. Organised by Get Active ABC under the banner of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, this is a genuine community day - no ticket, no wristband queue, just families arriving and making themselves at home in one of the best-equipped public parks in the North. It suits toddlers and older kids equally well, and parents tend to find it an easy, low-stress afternoon out.
The park itself is the main draw even before the fun day begins. A major Peace III-funded refurbishment transformed the site, and the play area now includes a pirate ship, zip line, pyramid climbing frame, swings, roundabout, sand pit, and slides - all in one well-maintained space. On the day itself, free activities and entertainment are laid on across the park, and local support organisations set up stands so families can connect with services in an easy, informal way rather than a clinic or office setting. The 2025 event ran from noon to 4pm and drew large crowds on a sunny August Saturday. Based on previous years, the 2026 edition is expected to follow a similar format and window, with Get Active ABC confirming details closer to the date. Picnic tables and barbecue areas are dotted around the park if you want to make a full afternoon of it.
Portadown sits on the main Belfast to Dublin rail corridor, and the town’s train station is a short, flat walk from the park - handy if you are coming from Belfast, Newry, or Dundalk. Translink bus services also connect Portadown to surrounding towns in Co. Armagh. By car, Portadown is on the M1/A1 route and easy to reach from most of Ulster. The park has free on-site car parking for around 60 cars, with additional on-street parking in the town centre nearby.
Portadown town centre is a few minutes from the park on foot, with cafes and shops if you want to stretch the day a little further. The River Bann runs through the area and there are pleasant walks along its banks. There is more to see in Portadown and across Co. Armagh.
