Remembering Joe - The Joe Dolan Show with the Dolan Family

Joe Dolan was one of those performers who made an audience feel like the night was made for them. Born in Mullingar in 1939, he went on to score a number one hit in 14 countries, play 23 concerts in 23 nights in the Soviet Union, and hold Irish charts across four decades. He died in 2007 but the love for his music has not dimmed. This tribute show brings together the people who knew him best - his brother Ben, who toured alongside Joe for 47 years, along with niece Sandra, nephews Adrian and Ray, and members of his original backing band - to run through the hits and share the spirit of what made a Joe Dolan night special.

What to expect

The show is called “Remembering Joe” and it leans into the nostalgia without being mournful about it. Expect the singalong hits - “Make Me An Island”, “Lady in Blue”, “Good Looking Woman”, “You’re Such a Good Looking Woman” - performed by family members who spent years on stage with Joe himself. Singer Karen Carroll joins the Dolan family on stage, and the whole evening is built around the idea that, as Joe used to say, his shows put people in a happy mood. Expect dancing, expect audience participation, and expect the kind of loosely choreographed joy that defines a good Irish music night. The venue is cashless, and the Green Room Bar and Restaurant at TF Royal is open if you want to eat before the show.

Getting there

TF Royal is on the Old Westport Road on the western edge of Castlebar town, easy to find coming off the N5 or N60. Castlebar is well served by Bus Eireann from Dublin, Galway, Westport, and Ballina, with the town’s bus stop a short walk from the venue. If you’re driving, on-site parking is available at TF Royal. Castlebar is about two hours from Dublin, one hour from Galway, and twenty minutes from Westport. If you’re coming from Westport for the evening, the N60 road takes you straight in.

While you’re in Castlebar

Castlebar is Mayo’s county town and a decent base for the region. August is peak season across the county, so the surrounding area is busy with festivals and outdoor activities. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
