At Moat Theatre · Abbey Road, Naas, Co. Kildare
Risteárd Cooper, co-creator of Après Match, brings his debut solo show to the Moat Theatre in Naas on Friday 10 July. “Out of His Head” is two hours of razor-sharp impressions, sketches, and absurd characters drawn from the worlds of politics, sport, journalism, and entertainment. If you grew up watching Après Match dissect Ireland’s sporting life on RTÉ, you already know Cooper’s instinct for finding the ridiculous in the familiar - and this show lets him loose without the familiar format. It suits fans of observational and character comedy who like their laughs grounded in recognisable Irish life.
Cooper describes the show as cultural nostalgia meets current madness, taking in the world as it is now, as it was, and as it might yet become. Expect a dizzying rotation of new characters alongside the kind of media and political impressions that made Après Match essential viewing. The format is fluid - sketches blur into stand-up, impressions land in unexpected places. The Moat Theatre’s black-box stage suits this kind of intimate, performer-led work: you are close to the action and the laughs travel fast in a room of 200 people. The show runs from 7pm to approximately 9pm.
Naas sits about 30 km south-west of Dublin city centre, just off the M7 motorway - it is a straightforward drive of around 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. By public transport, Bus Éireann and Dublin Coach run regular services between Dublin and Naas; the town centre is a short walk from the main bus stop. The Moat Theatre is on Abbey Road near the town centre. Street parking is available nearby, and Naas town has public car parks within easy walking distance.
Naas is a lively Kildare market town with good restaurants and pubs clustered around the main street - it is well worth arriving early for a meal before the show. There is more to see in Naas and across Co. Kildare.
