At Mermaid Arts Centre · Mill Lane, Bray, Co. Wicklow
Linda Ronstadt had one of the most remarkable voices in American popular music - country, folk, rock, soul, mariachi, opera - she moved between them all and made each feel effortless. This tribute show brings her catalogue to the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray on a July Saturday evening, fronted by Nichola Selak with an eight-piece band drawn from some of Ireland’s best touring tribute acts. If you grew up with “You’re No Good”, “Blue Bayou”, or “Different Drum”, this is a proper live show rather than a covers-night affair.
The band behind Nichola Selak includes musicians who tour with Mack Fleetwood, The Last Waltz, Harvest (a Neil Young tribute), and Beyond The Horizon, the Irish Pink Floyd show - so the musicianship is at a touring-professional level. There is also an All-Ireland Feiseanna-winning fiddle champion in the lineup, which matters because Ronstadt’s folk and country roots get proper treatment rather than being skipped in favour of the radio hits alone.
The show runs two hours and thirty minutes with a fifteen-minute interval. The Mermaid is a 242-seat intimate auditorium, purpose-built for live performance, so there is not a bad seat in the house.
Bray is on the DART line, roughly 40 minutes from Pearse Station in Dublin city centre. The DART runs regularly on Saturday evenings, and last trains back to Dublin run well after the show ends - check Irish Rail’s live schedule to confirm times. By road, Bray is off the N11/M11 south of Dublin; parking is available in Bray town centre car parks, including at the Florentine Centre nearby. Mill Lane is a short walk from the seafront and from Bray DART station.
Bray seafront is worth a walk before the show - the promenade stretches along the shingle beach, and there are plenty of places to eat along Main Street and the seafront before an 8pm curtain. There is more to see in Bray and across Co. Wicklow.
