Artist Andy Parsons runs a series of visual arts workshops for adults at Roscommon Arts Centre, each session taking a different movement in modern art as its starting point and combining a short art history discussion with hands-on making. The next session is Saturday, 26 September 2026 at 2pm, with further sessions already scheduled for 24 October, 28 November and 12 December, running at €10 per session with all materials provided.
Each workshop pairs a look at why a particular strand of modern art looks the way it does with a practical exercise in the same style, moving through Cubism, Surrealism, Abstraction and Expressionism across the series. Parsons, whose own practice spans painting, sculpture and installation work exploring time, memory and community, pitches the sessions at anyone curious to try a new approach rather than at experienced painters only: no previous art background is expected, and the centre supplies painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking materials as needed for each theme. Sessions are run individually, so it is possible to join for a single date without committing to the full series, which suits people testing out a technique or movement they have always been curious about. Parsons held a solo exhibition at the centre in 2025, so the workshops extend his relationship with Roscommon Arts Centre beyond his own show and into public art education.
Roscommon Arts Centre is on Circular Road in Roscommon town, a short walk from the town centre and the train station. Roscommon is served by Iarnrod Eireann’s Dublin-Westport/Galway line, and Bus Eireann routes connect the town to Athlone, Galway and Sligo.
