Strokestown Park’s curator Ciara Mc Cormac opens the county’s National Heritage Week programme with a talk on the conservation of the house’s historic wallpaper, in the Vaulted Stables on Saturday 15 August 2026. The wallpaper in the Library, the Dining Room and two of the smaller private rooms on the first floor of Strokestown Park House is original or historic material, and the talk sets out the risks it faces and the specialist work underway to protect it, with input from wallpaper expert David Skinner.
Mc Cormac uses the talk to explain the many risks faced by the built and decorative heritage inside a house like Strokestown Park: damp, light damage, past repairs done with the wrong materials, and simply the passage of time on paper that in some rooms has hung on the walls for well over a century. David Skinner, a specialist in historic Irish wallpaper, contributes expertise on how the surviving paper in the Library, Dining Room and two first-floor rooms is being assessed and cared for, a level of technical detail visitors do not usually get on a standard house tour. The talk runs an hour in the Vaulted Stables, a working part of the estate rather than a formal lecture theatre, which keeps it close in feel to the rest of Strokestown Park’s hands-on Heritage Week programming. It opens a week that also includes free museum entry, a walled garden conservation talk and a classic car show on the same grounds, making the wallpaper talk the first of several free heritage events at Strokestown Park across the fortnight around 15 to 23 August.
Strokestown Park is signposted from the N5 on the edge of Strokestown town, about 23km from Roscommon town. There is visitor parking on site.
