At Roscommon Agricultural Show Grounds · Roscommon, Co. Roscommon
The Roscommon Industrial and Agricultural Show is one of the great days out in the rural Irish calendar - a full Saturday in August given over to the serious business of livestock, craft, and competition, with enough going on to keep families busy from gates-open to prize-giving. Now in its 54th year, it draws exhibitors and spectators from right across Connacht. This is exactly the kind of event where Roscommon farmers show their best, craftspeople lay out their finest work, and children get to see the livestock and trades that define this part of Ireland.
The show runs from 8 AM through to 5 PM at Hannon’s Grounds on the Athlone Road, and judging is spread across the day so there is always something happening in the ring. The horse and pony section gets going at 9:30 AM with young horses, then working horses and ridden pony classes follow through the morning and afternoon. Cattle and sheep judging begins around 11:30 AM. Later in the afternoon, the show hosts two prestigious national competitions - the All Ireland Irish Draught Yearling Filly Championship Final and the All Ireland Shepherd and Shepherdess Championship, which lift the day well beyond a local fixture.
Away from the livestock rings, the show is equally rich. Home industries classes cover cooking, baking, flowers, and farm and garden produce. Arts and crafts, photography, and Lego competitions give a strong platform to non-farming talents. The dog show typically draws a lively crowd. Children get free entry and entertainment throughout the day. Prize money across the event runs to over €40,000, so competition in every class is taken seriously.
Roscommon town sits at the junction of the N61 and N63, well within reach from Athlone (25 km east), Galway (90 km south-west), and Sligo (80 km north). The show grounds are on the Athlone Road on the edge of town - straightforward to find from the N61 approach. Bus Éireann runs services from Athlone and Galway into Roscommon town; from the town centre it is a short walk or taxi out to Hannon’s Grounds. Ample parking is typically available on-site for a show of this scale.
Roscommon town has a fine 13th-century castle ruin worth a look, and the surrounding county is lough country - Lough Key Forest Park to the north and the Suck Valley Way for walkers. There is more to see in Roscommon and across Co. Roscommon.
