Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship 2026

At Various · Roscommon, Co. Roscommon

Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship matches

The Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship is one of the oldest club competitions in the county - running since 1902 - and it draws a loyal crowd of supporters who follow their local clubs through the summer and into September. Seven clubs compete for the Mickey Cunniffe Cup, and the standard is competitive enough to keep things interesting from the first group-stage round through to the final. If you have any connection to hurling, or simply want to watch a genuinely local form of the game played with conviction, this is a good way to spend a July or August afternoon.

What to expect

The 2026 championship follows the same format used in recent years. All seven clubs - Athleague, Four Roads, Oran, Pádraig Pearse’s, Roscommon Gaels, St Dominic’s and Tremane - play in a single group stage, with each side getting four matches. The top two finish into semi-finals directly; teams placed third to sixth go through quarter-finals first. It is a compact, high-stakes format where every result matters. Four Roads have dominated recently, claiming four consecutive titles between 2022 and 2025, but the championship regularly produces competitive finals. The 2025 decider went to Dr Hyde Park in Roscommon town, and a similar venue is likely for the 2026 final. Matches take place at club grounds across the county - Ballyforan, Kiltoom and Woodmount are venues used in recent years - so the atmosphere is tight and close to the pitch. Admission is typically paid on the gate; check the Roscommon GAA website for match-day specifics.

Getting there

County Roscommon sits in the middle of Connacht, with the town of Roscommon itself roughly equidistant between Athlone and Castlerea on the N61. From Dublin, it is about two hours by car via the M6 and N61. Bus Éireann operates services from Athlone and from Dublin through Roscommon town. For matches at club grounds around the county, a car is the practical option - most venues are in rural townlands and are not served by regular bus routes. Parking at GAA grounds is generally informal and free.

While you’re in Roscommon

Roscommon town has a Norman castle, a well-regarded county museum, and a decent main street with cafés and pubs that will have the match on if you need to follow a second game. The county itself is lake-heavy - Lough Key Forest Park to the north is worth a half-day. There is more to see in Roscommon and across Co. Roscommon.
