Roscommon Racecourse - July Fixture

At Roscommon Racecourse · Roscommon Racecourse, Co. Roscommon

Horse racing at Roscommon Racecourse

A Monday afternoon at the races is one of those simple pleasures that County Roscommon does well. The July fixture at Roscommon Racecourse brings thoroughbred flat racing to a compact, spectator-friendly track that has been hosting meetings since 1885. It suits families after a relaxed day out, racing fans keen to see competitive action without the crowds of a bigger course, and anyone looking for an excuse to be outdoors with a decent view and a pint in hand.

What to expect

Roscommon is a right-handed, flat course of one mile and two furlongs, with a noticeable incline approaching the winning post - that final climb makes for an exciting finish and gives punters in the stand a clear sightline right to the line. July is the heart of the flat season here, and the course’s biggest flat race, the listed Lenebane Stakes over one and a half miles, is run at the July meeting. Quality horses travel to Roscommon for it.

The course has three bars and various hospitality areas, with a dedicated area for owners and trainers. Stand and enclosures are close to the action - there is no bad seat here, and the intimate scale is a big part of the appeal. Facilities were modernised in 2019 with a rebuilt weighing room, new stables, and upgraded bars. The whole venue is wheelchair accessible. The mood is sociable rather than formal, and the racecourse is less than one kilometre from the town centre, so the day tends to extend beyond the last race.

Getting there

Roscommon town sits roughly in the middle of the country, about 155km from Dublin via the M6 and N61, and around 55km from Galway. Driving is the most practical option from most directions. There is car parking at the course. Bus Eireann runs services to Roscommon from Dublin, Galway, and Sligo, with the town stop a short walk from the racecourse. Allow extra time on race days if arriving by road from the east.

While you’re in Roscommon

After the racing, the town centre is on your doorstep, with Roscommon Castle - a well-preserved 13th-century ruin - worth a look before you leave. There is more to see in Roscommon and across Co. Roscommon.
