South Roscommon Charity Cycle

At Coláiste Chiaráin · Coláiste Chiaráin, Crannagh, Summerhill, Athlone, Co. Roscommon

South Roscommon Charity Cycle

Every July, South Roscommon Cycling Club opens up its routes to cyclists of all abilities for a day that combines solid miles through the Roscommon countryside with fundraising for a cause close to home. The 2026 event raises money for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, making this one of those sportives where the entry fee feels genuinely purposeful. Whether you are a seasoned sportive rider or someone looking for their first organised 60K, this is a well-supported outing with food on the road and a proper feed at the finish.

What to expect

Two distance options are on offer: a 60K route and a 100K route. Both start and finish at Coláiste Chiaráin in Summerhill on the Co. Roscommon side of Athlone, with registration on the morning from 8am and both waves rolling out at 9:30am. The roads through this part of Roscommon are quiet and largely flat to gently rolling - good honest cycling country without the drama of mountain passes.

The longer 100K route takes in a food and water stop at Athleague before riders join the 60K route through Dysart, where there is a second stop for both groups. Dysart sits in the low drumlin country south of Roscommon town, and the stop there is typically one of the better-stocked on the day. After the finish at Coláiste Chiaráin, post-cycle refreshments are laid on at the venue.

Entry fees are €30 for Cycling Ireland members and €40 for non-members. Registration is handled online through Eventmaster ahead of the day.

Getting there

Coláiste Chiaráin is on the Summerhill Road on the western edge of Athlone, in the Co. Roscommon townland of Crannagh. From Athlone town centre it is a short drive west; from the N6 Dublin-Galway road, take the Athlone West junction and follow signs for Summerhill. Parking is available at the school grounds on the morning.

Bus Eireann services connect Athlone to Dublin, Galway, and Roscommon town, but the venue is on the outskirts of town so a car or taxi from Athlone bus station is the practical option if you are travelling without a vehicle.

While you’re in Roscommon

Athlone itself straddles the Shannon and has plenty to keep you after the cycle - the castle, the old town, and some good places for a meal. There is more to see in Roscommon and across Co. Roscommon.
