National Heritage Week Free Entry at Strokestown Park

At Strokestown Park · Strokestown, Co. Roscommon

Strokestown Park House during National Heritage Week

Strokestown Park offers free entry to the National Famine Museum on Thursday, 20 August 2026, as its contribution to National Heritage Week, the annual nationwide programme run by the Heritage Council to open up Ireland’s heritage sites and stories. It falls in the middle of a packed August at Strokestown Park, which also runs talks on the estate’s historic wallpaper and built heritage risk through the same week, making it a good single day to see the museum without the usual admission charge.

What to expect

The National Famine Museum at Strokestown is one of the most significant Famine museums in Ireland, built around the Mahon family’s estate papers and the story of assisted emigration from the property during the 1840s. Heritage Week openings like this are designed to bring in visitors who might not otherwise pay for a ticket, so expect a busier than usual day, particularly around midday. Strokestown Park runs other Heritage Week programming across the same week, including a curator-led talk on the conservation of the house’s historic wallpaper and a discussion on built heritage at risk, so a Heritage Week visit can be combined with more than just the museum if timed right. The walled gardens and grounds remain part of the wider site.

Getting there

Strokestown sits on the N5, about 25km north of Roscommon town and 155km west of Dublin. Strokestown Park is signposted in the town centre with on-site parking. Bus Éireann’s N5 services connect Strokestown with Roscommon town, Athlone and Longford.

While you’re in Strokestown

Strokestown Park’s Georgian house and walled gardens sit alongside the museum, and the wider grounds are worth the rest of the day even without paying for the house tour. There is more to see in Strokestown and across Co. Roscommon.
