What to Expect

Saturday Art Club follows the same format as the centre’s Little Artist Club but is pitched at children aged 8 to 12, going further into materials and technique than the younger group’s session. Facilitators Bríd Colloton and Jeni Roddy lead the group through both old and new art-making methods, with more discussion of process and ideas built in alongside the making itself. Sessions include an “art detective” element, using the centre’s current exhibitions as a starting point for looking closely and talking about contemporary art, before children apply what they have picked up in their own work. It is a step up in independence from Little Artist Club, with children encouraged to develop their own ideas rather than follow a single set project. Wexford Arts Centre itself is housed in the town’s old Market House on Cornmarket, an 18th-century building that also hosts touring theatre, music and visual art exhibitions through the year, so the “art detective” exercises draw on whatever professional show happens to be on the walls that month rather than a fixed curriculum. For families with a younger child too, the back-to-back scheduling with the 10am Little Artist Club means one trip into town can cover both age groups without a long gap in between.
